2017: How Is The Funds Management Job Market In Melbourne?

I get asked this question all the time. So, I thought I’d draw a diagram that summarises what I have observed.

At present the funds management job market is very strong, with several themes driving growth and opportunities. These include the “pull” of candidates to Industry Super (investment and middle office), increased demand for business development professional and increased focused gender diversity, to name but a few.

Opportunities can depend on many variables, but there is a direct correlation to the amount of time it takes to identify and secure an opportunity based on what level you are pitching.

The time it takes to get to a great role depends not only on what you are looking for, but naturally also the amount of experience and skill set you have. Entry-level roles will typically have a one to two-month search period before landing a job. Contract positions have a much faster turnaround, with some recruitment assignments completed in less than 48 hours.

The higher up the ladder you go, there are fewer opportunities, recruitment processes take much longer and competition is intense.

Your network and personal brand are critical at this level and you must take a proactive approach to career management.

One aspirational COO we recently met with, set himself a goal to have two career development meetings a week. This includes meeting with recruiters, industry contacts, referral partners and attending industry events. He knows that to get his next opportunity will be a six-month long process, if not longer. Our observations support this. So, if you are ready for change, start now.

We see opportunities every day in our line of work and love connecting talented people to great opportunities. But don’t ever underestimate the importance of proactive career management; an increasing number of senior professionals we assist are finding work via their own network. Did you know that some industry analysis suggests up to 50% of all jobs are never advertised? People like to hire people they have worked with.

I recall a comment that Ian Silk, CEO of Australian Super said, “Always do a good job because people are always watching”, and if you are good at what you do, opportunities will sometimes find you.

Best regards

Matt
