Risk & Compliance FAQs

According to the latest Kaizen Recruitment Salary Guide, the average salary for professionals in risk and compliance is $172,000.

At the lower end, analysts with one to two years’ experience typically earn around $90,000 to $140,000 inclusive of superannuation. Meanwhile, CROs can expect to earn up to $450,000 inclusive of superannuation but exclusive of bonuses.

Senior risk and compliance professionals can typically expect to receive an annual bonus/incentives package worth a median $11,000.

Additionally, we are seeing an increase in organisations winning on their Employment Value Proposition (EVP) by offering better work-life balance, with no global calls at all hours of the night, a ‘work from anywhere approach’ and flexibility around families.

Further desirable job benefits include:

  • Having purpose at work
  • Career development pathways
  • Recognition and rewards
  • Extra holiday leave
  • Increased parental leave, including adoption leave
  • Childcare subsidies for the days employees are in the office
  • Subsidised transport costs (e.g. Myki, Opal, etc.)
  • Additional learning and development budget

There are many ways to attract highly qualified financial professionals to a risk and compliance team, including:

  • Offering competitive salary and benefits packages on-par (or above) the average market rate
  • Encouraging better work-life balance (and offering incentives which make this easier)
  • Tackling toxic work cultures
  • Monitoring workloads*
  • Strengthening your leadership team

*We are seeing many senior risk and compliance leaders resign from their positions without other roles to go to. Reasons include increased workloads due to heavy changes in regulation, years of change, project and transformation work, a delayed burnout felt due to restructures and running lean teams, and a severe lack of headcount to meet workload demands.

As Australia’s financial landscape evolves, we see the following skills as some of the most desirable among employers:

  1. Investment and market risk
  2. Investor reporting
  3. Enterprise and operational risk
  4. AML/KYC
  5. ESG and sustainability risk
  6. Investment governance and investment data governance
  7. Regulatory risk and compliance
  8. Investment/fund and mandate compliance
  9. Operational due diligence (ODD)
  10. Business resilience/continuity
  11. Financial crime and cybersecurity
  12. GRC and technology implementation and risk project work

The key to improving employee retention in risk and compliance is sitting down with your team and finding out what they desire in their role. If there is a distinct gap between what people want and what they can get, you will find an opportunity to make rapid improvements.

Looking towards creating long-term improvements, fundamental to employee retention is offering a great Employment Value Proposition (EVP). Your EVP is a statement of what you offer current and potential employees, drawn from your company values and culture, showcasing your unique qualities in comparison to industry peers.

Steps to improving your EVP include:

  1. Uncovering what your employees want from you, as described above.
  2. Constructing your EVP based on the data, aiming to write a clear, succinct statement encapsulating what your employees love about your organisation and why candidates should consider working with you.
  3. Communicating this EVP statement both internally and externally, ensuring it is well embedded into the company culture, strategic planning and recruitment process.

From here you can monitor, review and update your EVP over time to further optimise.
